In our original  BOOK, we selected 'HEALTH, WELLNESS & BETTERMENT' (H.W.B.) as our #1 insight for Health Innovators.
We've since met with dozens more disruptive health innovators and startups, and our thinking has evolved... now it seems even more important. In fact, we've come to believe that it's downright dangerous for health innovators to to believe their is a distinct line between clinical-grade vs. non-clinical-grade.  We'd go so as as to say that health innovators who insist on restricting their activities to clinical-grade only are putting themselves at a distinct disadvantage to their competitors who blur the line. 

We call this the 'Compliance Penalty' and in our view, it's a critical concept for all health innovators.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- consumers with a 'health job' routinely use non-clinical-grade app's/services (with or without clinical-grade treatment)

SO WHAT – We're seeing significant activity related to normalizing consumer-grade data. In our view, it won't be long before the leaders are as good as, and soon surpass clinical-grade reliability.  This is a new state-of-affairs, and health Innovators who insist on a clear boundary between health-grade and consumer-grade are putting themselves at a significant dis-advantage (irrespective of which side of the line they are on).  This is fundamental divide, so much so that foundational assumptions on this issue are rarely questioned, but the line is blurring and we believe that it's it's critical for all health innovators to re-think their position on this issue, and to course-correct their strategy accordingly.

WHAT ARE EMERGING INSIGHTS

FIRSTEP DeepDives are like drinking from an innovation fire-hose, constantly sparking  fresh insights. They start with a single discussion with a single startup, and then the idea starts to pop up in more and more discussions.  Sometimes the insight sort of fades away after a few of these discussions (not as important as we initially thought) but once in a while, the foundational insight evolves into idea that seems so important that we absolutely need to share it... that's what EMERGING INSIGHTS are.

One day, we'll find time to produce another book, and when we do, these insights will definitely be included. The problem is that we don't want to wait that long to share them with with the FIRSTEP community.

A BIT OF CONTEXT

EMERGING-INSIGHTS aren't fully formed yet and they are certainly not meant to tell you what to do.  The goal is to share early and provoke a reaction... to shine a light on hidden assumptions and prompt you to push back on our thinking and possibly questions one or two of your core assumptions.

In some cases, you won't find anything new, but that's OK, because these ideas came from very smart, innovative entrepreneurs, so at the very least they'll help validate and possibly even sharpen your thinking.  Other times it may be an entirely new concept... you might not even agree.  That's OK too.  The goal is to prompt you to reflect, not to convince you to blindly follow.  Either way, we believe these ideas are important enough to be shared now... without delay, and we'd encourage you to talk them through with your leadership team to hone your thinking, build alignment, and course-correct where you see fit.
